Welcome to the Exposure and Response Prevention Clinic of Toronto

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is the gold standard in behavioural treatment for anxiety disorders and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The approach is scientifically formulated to help you achieve your therapeutic goals by helping you approach, rather than avoid, fear producing stimuli. This is done carefully with the guidance of a well trained therapist and done so with ease, compassion and care.

Treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Anxiety

The number and length of treatment for an individual will vary considerably. Length depends on severity, availability of the client, and a number of other factors. Research documented within the clinic and empirically suggest that the most patients respond well to 10-15 sessions of treatment, conducted weekly. Each session is 50 minutes long.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD

Treatment providing Exposure and Response Prevention has demonstrated effectiveness in managing OCD symptoms, which is why it is not considered the first-line psychotherapy treatment for the disorder. Individuals with OCD experience anxiety that often at times are triggered by certain situations or stimuli in the environment. When an individual chooses to perform a ritual or engage in avoidance it decreases the anxiety. At that point, the ritual and avoidance actually reinforce the fear an strengthen both the obsession and compulsion.

Exposure and Response Prevention for Anxiety Disorders

Individuals who experience difficulties with anxiety will benefit significantly from Exposure and Response Prevention therapy. The goal is to break the cycle of the symptoms by reducing the safety behaviours (the things you do the keep yourself safe). This then provides you with the opportunity to learn new ways of coping and therefore producing new learning around the fear, which helps you manage your anxiety symptoms a lot better.
